The benefits of Allium sativum, known more commonly as garlic have been recognized and appreciated by numerous societies throughout the course of human history. Cultivation of the root originated in central Asia and found its way into the culinary and medicinal traditions of European, Mediterranean and Asian societies; with good reason.
In recent years medical studies have discovered a host of health benefits linked to garlic consumption, giving credence to the use of the plant as a colloquial health remedy over the past millenniums. These studies have discovered the anti-inflammatory and antibiotic properties. When crushed, raw garlic releases high levels of various sulfur compounds, which act as natural antibiotics and antifungal treatment. Use of garlic as an antibiotic was illustrated during the Second World War when antibiotics supplies were running short. Since then use of the root has been growing steadily as the medical profession has continued to recognize its benefits. One of the most widespread benefits of garlic that has been found has been its affinity for fighting acne.
The idea that garlic could help someone’s skin problems is probably the last thing on the mind of someone either chopping or eating garlic. However, garlic’s antibiotic and anti-inflammatory properties fit perfectly with the needs of those suffering from acne.
Acne begins with hair follicles that rupture, releasing oil and bacteria into nearby pores. As the oil and bacteria are released, the affected pores begin to swell as the surrounding tissue gets irritated. The pore closes up around the resulting infection, causing an accumulation of fluid and an unpleasant appearance on your face. These pimples may also result in deep scars if they are not taken care of properly. Luckily garlic can provide an appropriate solution when this occurs.
By eating freshly crushed raw garlic, by itself or with a meal, you can take advantage of its strong antibiotic effects, which will prevent the infection of what would have become an unsightly pimple. The anti-inflammatory properties of garlic will also go to work preventing the large red dot of irritated skin that is most commonly associated with acne. Another huge benefit of garlic is the fact that because it is a natural antibiotic, you do not need to up your intake to achieve the same antibiotic effects down the road. By adding crushed raw garlic to your current diet on a consistent basis you can protect yourself from future acne outbreaks.
There has been some debate over the exact method that should be taken when ingesting garlic for the purpose of fighting acne. Most sources agree that simply adding a small amount of crushed raw garlic to three or four meals a week will result in the desired effect. Cooked garlic will not have nearly as high nutrient content as raw garlic, so it is much more efficient to use raw. It is not advisable to apply garlic directly to acne outbreaks, as the acidity of the root could result in burning or further inflammation of sensitive facial skin.
